Our Story

At Winsome Acres, we believe every horse deserves a loving and purposeful life. As a tax exempt 501c3 non-profit organization, we offer permanent homes for rescued horses, horses for adoption and rehabilitation services, connecting compassionate individuals and families with horses in need of a second chance. Priority is given to neglected, special needs and senior equines to prevent slaughter, offering refuge and second chances.  A small sanctuary by design, we prioritize quality of life above all else. Every horse in our care is provided singular attention and an abundance of time and resources to feel safe and protected.

The Ranch

Winsome Acres Horse Sanctuary is a 50-acre haven in southern Oklahoma dedicated to the harmonious coexistence of humans, horses, and native wildlife. Our sanctuary offers horses both fenced pastures and shaded shelters for cold-weather protection, as well as expansive, free-roaming areas where they can thrive in a natural setting. To support the unique nutritional needs of our senior horses, we’ve installed automatic feeders that deliver small, frequent meals to replicate their natural grazing patterns. The land features a 1-acre pond adorned with native wildflowers, open Bermuda fields, and a newly built horse barn. Our herd lives together, barefoot and cherished, embodying a close-knit, natural lifestyle.

How Winsome Got its Name

At Winsome, you are welcomed by rolling hills adorned with golden sunflowers, each one a radiant symbol of faith, devotion, and optimism—mirroring our commitment to horses for adoption. The name Winsome stems from the Old English word wynn, meaning pleasure and delight, embodying the joy and innocence we cherish in our horses. Horses approach their relationships with humans with open hearts, free from the weight of past mistreatment or neglect, and meet us with unguarded sincerity.

Just as sunflowers turn to face the sun, the bond between horse and human is a transformative connection that nurtures and recharges the soul. At Winsome Acres, we believe horses hold a unique power to heal, and we are dedicated to sharing this gift with others, offering moments of peace, renewal, and profound connection.

A Place of Transformation, Hope, and Love

Our mission is to rehabilitate, rehome and offer permanent sanctuary for horses that have been abandoned, neglected, or are otherwise unwanted.  Our sanctuary provides a safe environment, medical attention, and rehabilitation to ensure each horse’s journey from rescue to recovery is a tale of compassion and renewal.

By providing a refuge for unwanted horses, we give them more than a new life; we honor their spirit and their worth. We provide not just physical care, but also emotional rehabilitation, ensuring that horses who have faced neglect, abuse, or serious medical conditions can recover in a safe and nurturing environment.

The process often begins with rescue and triage, where each horse is assessed by a veterinarian for condition. Some may require immediate medical intervention, such as treatment for malnutrition, infections, or chronic illnesses. We collaborate closely with equine health professionals to develop individualized care plans. This can include dietary plans, physical therapy, and ongoing medical treatments for conditions such as arthritis or pain management.

Equally important is providing a stress-free and enriching environment where the horses can regain their strength. Spacious pastures, clean shelters, and the companionship of other horses are integral to their recovery. Our goal extends beyond physical recovery. We aim to restore dignity and trust in these animals, many of whom have experienced trauma. Once rehabilitated, some horses may be adopted into loving homes, while others live out their days at the sanctuary, surrounded by care and compassion. Our mission embodies the belief that every horse, regardless of its past or current health challenges, deserves a second chance at life.

Our Vision & Commitment

Our Vision:

At Winsome Acres Horse Sanctuary, we envision a world where every horse, regardless of age, condition, or circumstance, is valued, protected, and cherished. A world where no horse faces neglect, abuse, or the threat of slaughter.

In this vision, equine welfare is a global priority, and every horse has access to compassionate care, a safe environment, and the opportunity to live a life of dignity. Communities and individuals come together to ensure that horses in need—whether special needs, senior, or at-risk—are given the second chance they deserve.

Through education, advocacy, and direct action, we strive for a future where every horse is safe, loved, and free to thrive in harmony with humans who respect and honor their contributions to our world.

 Our Commitment:

  • Our horse herd is our family. We consider their care a privilege.
  • We recognize that the needs of every horse are different—no horse is the same and no horse has the same story, so we don’t have expectations for our herd.
  • We commit to loving them just as they are unconditionally.
  • We dedicate singular attention to every horse to meet their individual needs.
  • For the life of those in our herd, we commit to providing healthcare, protection, and freedom for as long as they bless us on this earth.
