Offering permanent sanctuary, rehabilitation, and adoption services for unwanted horses, creating human and horse connection.

WHO we are

Our Mission

Winsome Acres Horse Sanctuary is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) equine rescue and therapy ranch established in 2024 and dedicated to improving domestic equine welfare through rescue, education, outreach, and compassionate care. Our mission is to provide permanent sanctuary, rehabilitation, and adoption opportunities for senior, special needs, at-risk, unwanted, and slaughter-bound horses while advocating for the humane treatment of all equines.

Through shelter, veterinary care, rehabilitation, and intentional horsemanship and therapeutic programs, Winsome Acres restores dignity and quality of life to vulnerable horses while creating meaningful opportunities for healing and connection within the community. By combining rescue efforts with educational outreach and therapeutic engagement, we strive to inspire compassion, responsible stewardship, and a deeper understanding of the powerful bond between horses and people.

A small sanctuary by design, we prioritize quality of care above all else. Every horse is provided singular attention and an abundance of time and resources to feel safe and protected, including rehabilitation training, emergency healthcare, veterinary care, feed, supplements, forage and on the ground training for potential rehoming and adoption. Each horse receives individualized and meticulous monitoring, evaluation, and rehabilitation.

Our Story

We believe every horse deserves safety, dignity, and a life filled with purpose.  We provide permanent sanctuary for vulnerable equines, offer rehabilitation and adoption services, and connect compassionate families with horses in need of a second chance. Our highest priority is serving neglected, senior, and special-needs horses—those most at risk of euthanasia, abandonment, or slaughter—ensuring they receive the protection and care they deserve.

Designed intentionally as a small, high-quality sanctuary, Winsome Acres emphasizes individualized care and exceptional welfare standards. Each horse receives focused attention, specialized nutrition, medical oversight, and an environment that fosters physical recovery and emotional wellbeing. Our approach is rooted in trauma-informed handling, evidence-supported rehabilitation practices, and a commitment to lifelong stewardship.

In addition to our rescue and sanctuary work, Winsome Acres is dedicated to community education, offering programs that promote animal welfare, safe equine handling, and introductory horsemanship skills. Through hands-on learning and engagement with our rescued herd, participants gain the knowledge needed to advocate for responsible horse care and contribute to a more humane equine community.

At Winsome Acres, we do more than save horses—we restore trust, nurture resilience, and help shape a future where every equine life is valued.

The Ranch

Winsome Acres Horse Sanctuary is a 50-acre haven in southern Oklahoma dedicated to the harmonious coexistence of humans, horses, and native wildlife. Our sanctuary offers horses both fenced pastures and shaded shelters for cold-weather protection, as well as expansive, free-roaming areas where they can thrive in a natural setting. To support the unique nutritional needs of our senior horses, we’ve installed automatic feeders that deliver small, frequent meals to replicate their natural grazing patterns. The land features a 1-acre pond adorned with native wildflowers, open Bermuda fields, and a newly built horse barn. Our herd lives together, barefoot and cherished, embodying a close-knit, natural lifestyle.

The Rehabilitation Process

While some may overlook sanctuaries that aren’t large, we choose to remain intentionally small to give focused, high-quality care to the hard cases—the horses who require time, patience, and specialized support to heal both physically and emotionally.

We are a volunteer-led sanctuary, committed to keeping costs low so that 100% of funds go directly to the care, feeding, medical treatment, and wellbeing of the horses. Many of our horses have endured trauma, chronic medical conditions, or prolonged neglect.

The journey often begins with rescue and triage, followed by a full veterinary assessment to determine immediate needs. Some horses require urgent medical intervention for malnutrition, infections, or chronic pain.

In collaboration with equine health professionals, we create customized recovery plans that may include specialized nutrition, physical therapy, and ongoing treatments.

Equally essential is the restorative environment we provide—quiet pastures, clean shelters, and healthy companionship. These elements help each horse regain strength, peace, and a sense of safety.

When a horse is ready, some transition into loving adoptive homes. Others remain with us as permanent residents, living out their days surrounded by compassion and respect.

Our Vision & Commitment

Our Vision:

We envision a world where every horse, regardless of age, condition, or circumstance, is valued, protected, and cherished. A world where no horse faces neglect, abuse, or the threat of slaughter.

 Our Commitment:

  • Our horse herd is our family. We consider their care a privilege.
  • We recognize that the needs of every horse are different—no horse is the same and no horse has the same story, so we don’t have expectations for our herd.
  • We dedicate singular attention to every horse to meet their individual needs.
  • For the life of those in our herd, we commit to providing healthcare, shelter and care.

Rescue. Rehabilitate. Release.

How Horses Support Human Healing

We believe the connection between humans and horses has the power to heal, restore, and transform lives. Horses are highly intuitive animals that respond to human emotion, body language, and energy in ways that foster trust, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and confidence. Research has shown that equine-assisted activities can reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and symptoms of trauma while improving social connection, emotional resilience, and overall mental well-being. Studies published by organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and PATH International have demonstrated measurable improvements in emotional health, communication skills, and self-esteem among participants engaged in equine-assisted programs.

For many individuals, horses provide a unique form of nonjudgmental connection that encourages presence, patience, and authentic relationship-building. The rhythmic movement, calming nature, and relational sensitivity of horses have been linked to decreased cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and increased feelings of safety and calm. At the same time, rescued horses themselves benefit profoundly from compassionate human interaction, consistent care, and trust-based rehabilitation. At Winsome Acres, this mutual healing relationship creates a space where both horses and people—many carrying unseen wounds—can experience restoration, purpose, and hope together.
