At Winsome Acres, we embrace the profound connection between humans and horses. Through permanent refuge, rehabilitation, adoption, companionship services and educational outreach we provide opportunities for individuals to experience the healing, joy, and personal growth that comes from engaging with these remarkable animals.
Every horse on our ranch has been rehabilitated and nurtured back to health, and they now serve as companions, teachers, and healers. Our peaceful setting reflects our commitment to intentional living and the healing power of connection—with both animals and the natural world.
When possible, Winsome Acres is a stepping stone to forever homes. We carefully match each horse with adopters who understand their needs and are committed to providing a loving, permanent environment. Seeing our horses thrive in their new homes is the ultimate reward, a testament to the resilience of these incredible animals.
Each horse that comes to Winsome Acres is evaluated and given personalized care, ensuring they are healthy, well-adjusted, and ready for their new home.
How Our Adoption Process Works:
1. Application: Prospective adopters complete an adoption application to help us understand their experience and expectations.
2. Matchmaking: Based on the application, we carefully match each adopter with a horse suited to their skills, environment, and goals.
3. Onboarding: We provide adopters with support and resources to ensure a successful transition, including training recommendations and ongoing guidance.
When you adopt from Winsome Acres, you’re not only giving a horse a new lease on life, but you’re also helping to create space for us to rescue more equines in need.
If you’re ready to open your heart and home to one of our incredible rescue horses, send us a message through our messaging function to learn more about the adoption process or schedule a visit to meet our horses.
Every horse that arrives at Winsome Acres carries a story. Some have been rescued from neglectful situations, others from auctions where their futures were uncertain or from other horse non-profits working to find homes. At our sanctuary, these once-forgotten souls are welcomed with open hearts and the promise of a new beginning.
When a horse arrives at Winsome Acres, they are often scared, malnourished, or injured—both physically and emotionally. Our first step is to provide them with the care they desperately need:
• Medical Attention & Triage: Every horse receives thorough veterinary care to address their health concerns.
• Nutrition and Rehabilitation: We work to restore their strength through proper feeding, supplements, and gentle exercise.
• Love and Trust: With time and patience, our team helps each horse overcome their fears and rediscover their trust in humans.
We are dedicated to caring for sick and injured horses as a haven for equines in need, offering them a chance at healing and hope. We provide not just physical care, but also emotional rehabilitation, ensuring that horses who have faced neglect, abuse, or serious medical conditions can recover in a safe and nurturing environment.
The process often begins with rescue and triage, where each horse is assessed by a veterinarian for condition. Some may require immediate medical intervention, such as treatment for malnutrition, infections, or chronic illnesses. We collaborate closely with equine health professionals to develop individualized care plans and refeeding programs. This can include dietary adjustments, physical therapy, and ongoing medical treatments for conditions such as arthritis or other pain management.
Equally important is providing a stress-free and enriching environment where the horses can regain their strength. Spacious pastures, clean shelters, and the companionship of other horses are integral to their recovery. Our goal extends beyond physical recovery. We aim to restore dignity and trust in these animals, many of whom have experienced trauma.
Rehabilitation is a key component of stress, injury and emergency recovery in horses. Our rehabilitation involves a structured program of exercises and therapies that are specifically tailored to the type and severity of the horse’s injury, experience and current physical state, as well as its stage of recovery. We develop specific care management plans for each horse as well as planning and ongoing assessment to support the horse’s return to activity.
In addition to ongoing medical support individual rehabilitation programs may include: Controlled exercise, Hydrotherapy, Massage therapy and Chiropractic care. Collectively, these modalities are referred to as physiotherapy or physical therapy. In an ideal scenario, the horse’s rehabilitation program concludes when the horse returns to their pre-injury or pre-stress level of activity without recurring issues or pain.
For some horses, especially those recovering from serious injuries or malnutrition and neglect, a successful rehab outcome may mean returning to a lower level of performance or activity in which case the horse cannot be placed for adoption and rehoming and will remain at the sanctuary for life. Regardless of the outcome, a successful rehabilitation process is typically characterized by:
• Restoration of the horse’s ability to engage in some level of physical activity
• Alleviation of pain and discomfort
• Sustained long-term health and physiological stability
• Evidence of positive mental well-being
